This workshop is a practical, hands-on session that will focus on educating and upskilling botanists to contribute to Wikidata.
Wikidata is an open knowledge base of structured linked data, and is a sister project to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Wikidata provides stable identifiers (QIDs) for every Wikidata item representing entities such as places, people, objects, institutions, taxa, etc. In addition, it functions as a hub for other identifiers thus linking to external biodiversity data sources, facilitating the creation of open linked data in for the benefit of us all.
We will provide an opportunity for workshop attendees to learn how to edit Wikidata and create new content, assist attendees in improving their Wikidata editing and querying skills, and encourage and empower them to continue to contribute to Wikidata. We will also give attendees practical skills and tips that they can use immediately to “Wikidata-ify” the International Botanical Congress while attending conference sessions.
Specifically, workshop attendees will gain practical knowledge and skills in Wikidata in how to:
• Create a Wikidata account, username and profile
• Create and edit Wikidata items for botanists, botanical collectors, research papers, plant taxa, and more
• Add statements to Wikidata items
• Link other identifiers to Wikidata items and vice versa (round tripping)
• Add citations to statements in Wikidata
• Add photos (via Wikimedia Commons) to Wikidata items
• Install and use helpful tools and gadgets for editing Wikidata
• Query the Wikidata database using the Wikidata Query service
• Model the reuse of Wikidata items using the website Bionomia as a use case
• Wikidata-ify the IBC 2024 and future events
The workshop will be run in English, but the organisers will also be able to present content and answer questions in Spanish and German. Because Wikidata is a multilingual linked knowledge base, anyone can contribute to it in any language, which means workshop attendees can edit Wikidata during the workshop in their own language if they choose.
