Proposed Symposium Title: SYSTEMATICS, EVOLUTION AND DIVERSIFICATION OF MAGNOLIALES (ANNONACEAE, EUPOMATIACEAE, MAGNOLIACEAE, MYRISTICACEAE)

Abstract: Magnoliales includes six morphologically and biogeographically diverse families of mainly tropical plants (Annonaceae, Degeneriaceae, Eupomatiaceae, Himantandraceae, Magnoliaceae, Myristicaceae, sensu APG IV). Over the past years, molecular and morphological advancement has led to a much better understanding of the systematics and evolution of this order. It is also an interesting study group to understand the evolution of biodiversity in general, and in the tropics in particular. The proposed symposium aims to gather a diverse group of researchers and summarize the recent advancements in understanding their systematics, evolution and diversification. The symposium will accept talks from fields such as taxonomy, molecular systematics (from species delimitation to species level phylogenies), and diversification studies. We shall be particularly interested in hosting research using next generation data or approaches using integrated fields (combining molecular and morphology for example). Depending on the number of participants we shall have one or two sessions with 6 talks each. We particularly encourage talks from students, early career scientists from the global south institutes.

Speaker 1: Speaker: Marie-Stéphanie Samain Affiliation: Instituto de Ecología, México Email: mariestephanie.samain@gmail.com Talk title: Evolution, biogeography and conservation of Neotropical Magnolia species.

Speaker 2: Speaker: Sylvia Mota de Oliveira Affiliation: Naturalis Biodiversity Center, The Netherlands Email: sylvia.motadeoliveira@naturalis.nl Talk title: Myristicaceae in Brazil and the Guianas - diversity and systematics

Speaker 3: Speaker: Thomas L.P. Couvreur (and many coathors…) Affiliation: Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, France Email: thomas.couvreur@ird.fr Talk title: Near-complete species sampling and phylogenomics of the major pantropical Annonaceae

Topics (Up to three): Systematics and taxonomy

Topic 2: Biogeography / Phylogeography

Topic 3: Phylogenetics and Phylogenomics

Justification: Our symposium will bring together different IBC2024 topics, namely 31) Systematics and taxonomy; Biogeography (3), Macroevolution (19), and Phylogenomics (22). The symposium will be of interest to a wide audience because of its intercontinental/global scale reach and also because it contains iconic groups such as Magnolia, Myristicaceae or Annonaceae. We will select a balance between gender, global south and north, early and advanced career level and as well geographic origin of the speakers.
