Research professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Formerly, director of the Royal Botanic Garden of Madrid, vicepresident of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT), president of the International Organization of Plant Biosystematists (IOPB) and Council member of IAPT. He was elected corresponding member of the Botanical Society of America in 2023. His research uses a broad framework grounded in plant systematics to address questions about patterns of biodiversity, drivers of speciation, and underlying evolutionary processes, particularly natural hybridization.
