My research is focused on understanding how socioecological systems work, and using transdisciplinary science to design interventions that address global environmental problems. Recently I've been focused on ecological restoration. I am the founder and president of the International Institute for Sustainability, a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, and the founder and chief scientist of re.green. I was a Lead-Author of the IPBES Global Assessment, a member of the Science Task Force of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and co-developed Brazil’s National restoration Plan.
