Kaoru Kitajima has held faculty positions Kyoto University, Japan (2013-current) and University of Florida (1997-2013), and a research associate position with Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. She is a member of the Science Council of Japan (Chair, Integrative Biology Committee) and elected as President of the Ecological Society of Japan (2024-2026).
