Proposed Symposium Title: IAWA SYMPOSIUM - THE CONTRIBUTION OF WOOD IN FOREST: FROM WOOD DYNAMICS TO TRAIT DIVERSITY AND CARBON GAINS

Abstract: Increasing role of forestry has been recognized in the global wood supply and carbon dynamics. Xylem developed from cambium, consisting of diversified wood cells, is the tree’s largest reservoir of biogenic carbon. Among the ecosystem services provided by forests, more than half of the carbon fixed by trees is stored in xylem. Therefore, wood is an important carbon reservoir and plays a significant role in carbon neutrality. On the other hand, the wood anatomical, biological and chemical traits are the basis for understanding wood structure, performance and utilizations, which is also an important indicator to reflect the external climate change and the main reference for the historical reconstruction of climate. Based on the scope of wood development, diversified structure and carbon gains, the function of wood in the forestry will be better understood and target the goal of carbon neutrality for human society, thus the theme of this IAWA symposium is linked to Topic 9 Development and Structure of IBC 2024, including xylem differentiation, wood anatomy and wood carbon science. The goal of the symposium is to present the most recent advances in theories, methods and applications of the contribution of wood in forest from wood dynamics to trait diversity and carbon gains, specifically, this symposium will focus on: (1) improving research capacity of investigation methods; (2) establishing databases and integrating network; and (3) providing application adopted with effective technologies and tools for various scenes. The objective of this symposium is to provide a good chance for participants of wood community and forestry and even botany society to strengthen the international cooperation and understand the topic of xylem development and structure of tree, in order to promote multiple value systems and sustainable development of forestry resources.

Justification: The scientific quality and relevance to the congress theme/topic of this proposed IAWA symposium meet the criteria for selection very well, which has been indicated in the description and justification of session. Meanwhile, the three organizers, containing one female and two male scientists, are from Asia and Europe region respectively. The proposed speakers represent good balance of geographic, gender and research experience diversity. In total three organizers from one IUBS Affiliate Member – International Association of Wood Anatomists (IAWA), and three research organizations are involved in the symposium organization.
